Jence on peak

Katherine Jones-Lippy

After finishing college in Minnesota, I was looking for a way to make a positive impact on the world around me, while doing something I enjoyed. I worked on several organic farms and then settled at The Farm School, in Western Massachusetts, for a few years. I began teaching carpentry to students at the farm and experimented with several building methods. I was drawn to timber framing for its traditional aspects and how well it melds with alternative building methods. I completed a timber frame apprenticeship in North Carolina and worked for several timber frame companies in Vermont and Maine, before embarking on this business venture with Jence.

I grew up in Farmington, ME and enjoy running a company that uses local materials in its product. Utilizing timbers harvested and milled in the area is important to me, as is creating connections at the various levels of the supply chain. Timber framing has allowed me to combine my interest in the forest ecosystem with an interest in woodworking and building. While I also enjoy fine woodworking projects, such as cabinetry and furniture building, timber framing feels the most utilitarian to me and its solid link with the past provides historical context. Timber framing, with its focus on durability, quality craftsmanship and prudent use of resources, provides a template for our future path on the earth.
